Fatality reported in crash on Highway 46 near Cholame Y

One person died and multiple were injured in a crash involving a motorhome and a truck hauling a travel trailer at the Highway 46/Highway 41 Cholame "Y" on Thursday. 

It happened at about 2:50 p.m. east of the Shandon rest stop.

A California Highway Patrol officer at the scene says the motorhome made an abrupt turn from Highway 46 onto Highway 41, into the path of the pickup that was hauling the trailer.

Two people in the motorhome, a woman and a child, were ejected. CHP says the woman died at the scene and the child was taken to a local hospital by helicopter.

CHP later released the names and conditions of those involved in the crash. The woman who died was 37-year-old Cheryl Vanwettering of San Jose. The driver of the pickup truck,. John Saxon, 60, and one 14-year-old passenger from the motorhome had major injuries.

The driver of the motorhome, Francisco Savala III, 44, had minor injuries, along with another passenger, an 8-year-old girl.

The passenger of the truck, Susan Saxon, 59, suffered from moderate injuries. 

No additional update on their condition has been released.
