Some YouTube cartoons not 'kid friendly' despite parental controls

Posted: Updated:

Elsa, Spiderman, Peppa the Pig, and Mickey Mouse are all popular characters that kids enjoy on YouTube.

For 3-year-old Harper, it's Paw Patrol, but his mom quickly found out some of those cartoons aren't what they seem.

"The recommended videos that would show up after that one was over were of the characters, but they were animated by someone else and they were animated in a way that was violent. These dogs were in violent situations," said Haylee Slade, Harper's mom.

Haylee says they were using YouTube for Kids, which should filter out inappropriate videos, but it didn't.

"His favorite characters turned into something that was not innocent and something he should not have seen," Slade said.

Even after blocking the graphic videos, Haylee says that didn't stop the rest of them from showing up, so she deleted the app altogether.

"I was afraid that if he would continue to watch them, it would become his normal," Slade said.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Crime Prevention Specialist Brandy Swain says, unfortunately, this problem is all over the Internet.

"You will see, especially on YouTube, a lot of these channels try to gear their entertainment towards kids because that's money for them," Swain says.

On top of using parental controls, Swain suggests checking browser history and putting a time restraint on Internet usage.

While the cartoons are a concern, she cautions parents that the danger might also be the video creator.

"You have adults who are creating these sites knowing that it's their opportunity to engage with young people. So what are their intentions? That's what parents should be asking and probably be most worried about," Swain says.

A simple Google search can show you how to implement those parental controls. Crime specialists say they should be on nearly every device.

The Sheriff's Office can also help. Crime Prevention Services offers group presentations on keeping the Internet safe for your child. For information on how to schedule a presentation, click here.
