A Cabrillo High School student used his senior project to spread some joy among the residents of the Lompoc Valley Medical Center’s Comprehensive Care Center.

Isaac Rich threw a “prom” for the seniors Friday, April 21.

Rich said his sister works at the center and suggested doing his project there.

“And then we kinda got going and we were like, ‘Hey, we can throw a dance here,’” Rich said.

Rich spent dozens of hours planning, meeting with the activity director of the center, and fundraising to pay for decorations.

“I had some friends who volunteered to bake stuff, and that was a huge help,” Rich said. “And then some of them are here dancing.”

The theme of the evening was “All That Jazz.”

Attendees received ballots at the beginning of the evening to vote for prom king and queen. Robert Wollitz was crowned king of the senior prom, and Connie Garcia was crowned prom queen.

While the evening turned out to be a hit, Rich said he was actually surprised to see everyone having such a good time.

“Because I came earlier and I dressed up all fancy and I had invitations to the prom (with all the details). I did that like a week ago … and they didn’t seem too interested,” he said. “But they seem to be enjoying it now so that’s what really matters.”

Rich said he and his sister have already been talking about making senior prom an annual event.
