California Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham, (R-35), is asking the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to take action regarding the deadly stretch of Highway 46 that intersects Highway 41 near Cholame.
Cunningham wrote a letter Monday claiming there are more steps that can be taken to prevent further fatalities in that area, otherwise known as the "Y" of Cholame. On Saturday, one man died after the driver of another vehicle was turning at the intersection.

A couple weeks prior to that, on April 20, one person died and five others were injured in a similar crash.

Cunningham comments on the number of recent fatalities, mentions potholes becoming a driving hazard, and a call to action to ensure driver safety.

"In the past two months alone, there have been six fatal crashes on these two highways," Cunningham wrote. "This is unacceptable."

Cunningham goes on to say that Caltrans has taken previous measures to help improve the highways, such as installing lane barriers on Highway 46 near Shandon, but he says that's not enough.

A surge in traffic is around the corner, the assemblyman says, noting the Mid-State Fair and increased tourism.

We reached out to Caltrans for comment and will be updating this story.
