Hyland named Big West Pitcher of the Year; six named All-Big West

Posted: Updated:

Highlighted by senior righthander Sierra Hyland’s second career Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year honor, six Cal Poly softball players earned All-Big West praise following the Wednesday morning distribution of year-end conference awards.

Joining Hyland – also named Big West Pitcher of the Year as a freshman in 2014 – as a member of the all-conference first team was junior righthander Lindsey Chalmers. Two Mustangs earned All-Big West second team praise in senior left fielder Courtney Tyler and junior shortstop Chelsea Convissar. Junior third baseman Stephanie Heyward was an all-conference honorable mention selection while first baseman Hailey Martin was named to the Big West All-Freshman Team.

Hyland (22-12), Cal Poly’s first four-time All-Big West selection since righthander Anna Cahn (2008-11), currently ranks sixth among NCAA Division I pitchers in ERA (1.00), 10th in shutouts (10), 14th in strikeouts (249), 23rd in hits allowed per seven innings (4.34) and 53rd in walks allowed per seven innings (1.36) and strikeouts per seven innings (7.4). Among Big West Pitchers, Hyland also leads with her 22 victories and 237.1 innings pitched. A two-time USA National Collegiate Player of the Week selection and five-time Big West Pitcher of the Week honoree in 2017, Hyland features a 5.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, averages 1.1 strikeouts per inning and has produced seven double-digit strikeout games. This season alone, Hyland established a new Big West career strikeout record (currently 940) and new Cal Poly program records for victories (80), appearances (157), starts (118), innings pitched (918.0), shutouts (36) and saves (six)

The first two-time Big West Pitcher of the Year honoree since Long Beach State’s Meredith Cervenka and Marcel Torres shared honors in 2004 and 2005, Hyland requires just 14 more strikeouts to match her own Cal Poly single season record of 263, set in 2014.

Chalmers (12-7), an All-Big West honorable mention pick last season, currently ranks 48th among NCAA Division I pitchers in ERA (1.68) and 39th in hits allowed per seven innings (4.80). Also third among conference pitchers with a .189 opposing batting average, Chalmers conceded just 11 earned runs in 47.0 Big West innings. She struck out a career best nine hitters in a seven-inning game four times in 2017 and 10 in nine innings versus Long Beach State (April 14).

A Big West All-Freshman Team selection in 2014, Tyler has started all 54 games for Cal Poly this year and ranks second in the lineup with 23 RBI and fourth with 37 hits. A starter in 186 straight games, Tyler has struck out just 10 times in 186 plate appearances this season and produced seven multi-hit games, five multi-RBI games and a .986 fielding percentage.

Also a Big West All-Freshman Team selection in 2015, Convissar is Cal Poly’s leader with 30 runs, ranks second with 13 multi-hit games and third with a .309 (46-for-153) batting average. Convissar, who has hit safely 32 times this season, has made all 49 of her starts at shortstop.

The only Mustang to play every inning of every game at the same position, Heyward is Cal Poly’s second leading hitter with a .307 (50-for-163) mark. Heyward, who has struck out a team low five times in a team leading 196 plate appearances, was an All-Big West first team selection last year and a second team honoree as a freshman in 2015.

A .299 (35-for-117) hitter in her first season, Martin ranks second in Cal Poly’s lineup with 23 RBI and five multi-RBI games while compiling a .991 fielding percentage.

Enjoying its highest win total in eight seasons, Cal Poly (35-19) continues National Invitational Softball Championship postseason play with a Region 1 winner’s bracket final versus Nevada on Tuesday, May 17 at 4 p.m. A win advances Cal Poly to Thursday’s Region 1 championship in the double-elimination format; a loss relegates Cal Poly to a 7 p.m. elimination matchup versus Pacific.
