Templeton sweeps baseball & softball CIF playoff home opener

Posted: Updated:

The Templeton Eagles capitalized on having home-field advantage for their CIF playoff opener, with softball dominating Alhambra (Los Angeles) 20-2 and baseball coming back to defeat Loara (Anaheim, Orange County) 2-1.

The baseball team overcame an early 1-0 deficit, thanks in part to clutch hitting by Justice Gibbons. The sophomore knocked in both of Templeton's runs, including a shot down the left field line that broke a 1-1 tie and score Shane Wyatt in the fifth inning. The team also got some great defensive efforts, highlighted by Rigel Halls' first inning diving catch in right field followed by a throw to first to get the runner on first out after he took off too early and complete the double play.

Brodan Willison pitched a strong six innings before Gibbons came in to close the door in the seventh inning. Loara had the tying run at third base before Gibbons induced a game-ending pop-up to shallow right field. The Eagles will travel to La Canada in Los Angeles for the second round of the division five playoffs.

The softball team dominated Alhambra, leading by as much as 12 after two innings. Both of Alhambra's runs were unearned, the second coming in off an illegal pitch. Sophomore Ashley Daugherty struck out 13 en route to pitching five innings and launching a three-run homerun to left field. Catcher Ashley Ingle also had a homerun. The Eagles will travel to Godinez (Santa Ana, Orange County) for the second round of the division five playoffs.
