Firefighters are battling a brush fire that broke out Friday afternoon at Camp Roberts in northern San Luis Obispo County.

It was first reported at about 1:10 p.m.

According to CAL FIRE, which is assisting Camp Roberts crews, the fire has burned 5,000 acres and is 60 percent contained as of 6:30 p.m.

Smoke and flames were visible from Highway 101.

Camp Roberts officials say the fire started on one of their training ranges. It is being called the "Range Fire."

The fire comes a day after a controlled burn was conducted at Camp Roberts. Approximately 500 acres of brush were burned in preparation for a larger burn that is scheduled for May 25.
