Controlled burn scheduled Thursday at Camp Roberts

Posted: Updated:

Camp Roberts plans to conduct a controlled burn on Thursday, May 25.

The burn is scheduled between approximately 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and people in northern San Luis Obispo County should expect to see and smell smoke during that time.

Base officials say between 250 and 950 acres will be burned in areas where live rounds used in training can ignite brush.

A controlled burn of about 500 acres was conducted on May 18 to create a fire break in preparation for Thursday's burn. A day after that burn was conducted, a brush fire broke out on base, burning about 5,000 acres, according to CAL FIRE.

Because of that wildfire, officials at Camp Roberts say they won't have to burn as much as they had originally planned on Thursday.

Multiple local fire agencies and California Army National Guard units will be assisting at Thursday's burn.
