The Central Coast is unique when it comes to our agriculture. We grow wine grapes, strawberries, and even luffa sponges.

The Luffa Farm is tucked away along Willow Road in Nipomo.

You'll find backyard remedies there like peppermint and lavender, but the cash crop grown there is luffa.

"It will go from this big, heavy, heavy green to a yellow and then it browns on the vine, and then when it does turn brown you'll find your luffa actually hiding underneath the brown shell," explained owner Deanne Coon.

Yes, that scrub in your bathroom likely comes from inside this greenhouse.

Coon started growing luffas as a hobby. Sixteen years later, it's a lifestyle.

She gives free tours Wednesday through Sunday and sells her products at the farm and online.

"These guys are totally non-abrasive so you can wash the dishes, the pots, the pans, the babies, the Corvettes, the RVs," Coon said.

They're also biodegradable.

The Luffa Farm is located at 1457 Willow Road in Nipomo. For more information, call (805) 343-0883 or visit their website.
