SLO Food Bank raises $65,000 during Hunger Awareness Day

Posted: Updated:

The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County collected $65,000 Friday during Hunger Awareness Day.

According to the Food Bank, one in six SLO County residents lack consistent access to nutritious food.

"Hunger does some of its best work quietly and invisibly in the community,” SLO County Food Bank CEO Kevin Drabinski. “So the hopelessness that it's engendering doesn't take out the full-page ad, the despair doesn't express itself in 140 characters or less so we really needed to bang the drum every once in a while and say 'here we are, these are the needs and this is your opportunity to be able to step up and help us.'"

People could donate in person at 28 sites across the county.

In downtown San Luis Obispo, the National Corvette Restorers Society donated $500, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center donated $2,500, and Rabobank donated $10,000.

The Food Bank’s goal is $1 per county resident.

People can donate all month long. Visit slofoodbank.org for more information.
