12 injured after fight breaks out at Lompoc federal prison

The Federal Bureau of Prisons says there was a fight between inmates at Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex Wednesday night.

Officials say the fight broke out at the Federal Correctional Institution at about 9:00 p.m.

Prison staff say the incident was immediately contained and sent the inmate population back to their housing units.

According to officials, nine inmates were treated for non-life threatening injuries.Three prison staff members sustained minor, non-life threatening injuries.

The facility remains on a limited operational status, and officials say it will return to full operational status as soon as possible.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons says the public was not in danger at any time Wednesday night.

Roughly 1,300 inmates are housed at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Lompoc, a low-security facility.

First responders rushed to Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex Wednesday night to respond to a disturbance at one of the prisons.

Details of what happened inside the prison complex are unclear but the flashing lights of ambulances and emergency vehicles were clearly seen and widely reported.

One viewer contacted KSBY to report drivers were being turned around on a road that leads to the prison complex, saying a checkpoint was set up on Santa Lucia Canyon Road at the bridge over the Santa Ynez River, where the road becomes Floradale Ave.

A local Facebook group lit up with comments from worried families of correctional officers who had been called back to work to respond to the emergency.

No details have been released by the federal authorities overseeing the prison.

Roughly 1,300 inmates are housed at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Lompoc, a low-security facility. Another 1,400 medium-security and minimum-security inmates are housed at United States Penitentiary (USP) Lompoc.
