16-acre fire contained behind Santa Maria homes

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters contained a brush fire that broke out uncomfortably close to a Santa Maria neighborhood Friday evening.

The fire broke out shortly after 6 p.m. in dry brush behind homes on Alderberry Drive in the Tanglewood area.

Neighbors came out to stamp out the flames with shovels and some sprayed water over their fences from backyard hoses to keep the fire at bay.

Santa Barbara County Fire and Santa Maria City Fire departments responded. The fire was 100-percent contained at 7:40 p.m.

Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said the fire burned 16.3 acres and, by his estimation, no structures were threatened.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
