Firefighters battled a brush fire east of Santa Maria on Monday afternoon.
The fire was first reported at about 3:00 p.m. off of Santa Maria Mesa Road near the intersection with Rancho Tepusquet Road.
By 5:30 p.m., firefighters said the fire had burned six acres, revised from seven acres previously reported. The fire was 40 percent contained and firefighters said forward progress of the flames was stopped. They expected full containment by 10:00 p.m.
Firefighters said the fire was burning in an area that was difficult to access because of the steep terrain.
A firefighting aircraft were assisting crews on the ground by making drops on the flames, as well as a helicopter that was making water drops. Dozers and a hand crew were also on scene.
The cause of the fire was unknown, but investigators were on scene.
