UPDATE: The Hill Fire burning along Parkhill Road near Santa Margarita has grown to approximately 1,200 to 1,500 acres and was 40 percent contained by Tuesday morning.

Early mapping from CAL FIRE showed the fire could have grown to 2,000 acres. Fire officials have more accurately estimated the fire to have burned 1,200 to 1,500 acres.

CAL FIRE officials said at least one structure had burned and many others were threatened. Witnesses tell KSBY News it was a home that was destroyed.

It was estimated that around 250 people have been evacuated due to the fire, which broke out shortly after 3:30 p.m. For information on the areas evacuated, click here.

An evacuation shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross at Santa Margarita Elementary School, located at 22070 H Street in Santa Margarita. Evacuees can bring their animals.

Highway 58 was closed in each direction from Parkhill Road to O'Donovan Road because of the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Multiple crews from in and out of San Luis Obispo County have been called in to help battle the blaze. By Tuesday morning, roughly 1,200 people were assigned to the fire.

Two fires were initially reported in the area and later merged into one. One of those fires was from a vehicle on Parkhill Road. Fire officials say the vehicle has since been towed and is now part of the Hill Fire investigation.

CAL FIRE SLO Spokesman Chris Elms said vegetation management and fuel reduction projects have also been going on along Parkhill Road, but they were still working to determine if any crews were working in the area of where the other fire began.

Parkhill Road was closed to traffic east and west of the fire and the following areas were placed under an evacuation warning and told to prepare for evacuations if necessary: south of Parkhill Road from La Entrada to Huer Huero Road, and west of La Entrada on Parkhill Road to Highway 58.
