Red Cross: Best way to help is through financial donations

Posted: Updated:

As the local Red Cross Chapter continues to aid dozens of residents affected by wildfires, the organization believes the best way to support relief operations is through financial donations.

Jessica Piffero, Regional Director of Communications of the American Red Cross says that the organization's main focus right now is to provide the primary necessities of those affected, including food, shelter, and comfort. Donated items diverts time and resources from helping those in immediate need because they must be cleaned, stored, and distributed. To make the process more prompt, The Red Cross currently would prefer financial donations which can be accessed quickly and be put to use right away.

"We are overwhelmed with the generosity of the community and are so grateful for all the offers of donations," said Red Cross Executive Director Kimberly Coley. "But each disaster is unique and so are the needs of its victims. The best and quickest way to support our current relief operations is through a financial gift."

The community can help those affected by California wildfires and other crises by donating to the Red Cross Disaster Relief. To donate, visit the Red Cross website, call 1-800 RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. The organization also encourages people to call the public information line at (805) 272-0029, to see what items are needed before dropping off donations of food, clothing, or household items.

If you would still like to donate goods, at this time the Red Cross is accepting cases of water and pre-packaged snacks at both of it's shelter locations, San Marcos High School and Minami Community Center.
