With new evacuation orders issued Friday for the Whittier Fire, the Red Cross says even more people are turning to its evacuation shelter for assistance.

The shelter is setup at San Marcos High School, located at 4750 Hollister Ave. in Goleta. People with small pets can bring them to this shelter. Large animals can be taken to the Earl Warren Show Grounds.

Due to nearly twice as many people now coming in, the Red Cross says they will be relocating people from the high school's cafeteria to the gymnasium.

People are also staying outside in RVs.

The evacuation orders issued Friday in the area of the Whittier Fire include:

  • All of Winchester Canyon Road excluding the community of Wagon Wheel, Langlo Ranch Road and Winchester Commons west to El Capitan Ranch Road
  • Calle Real north to West Camino Cielo from Winchester Canyon Road on the east to El Capitan Ranch Road on the west
  • Paradise Road from Highway 154 to the first river crossing
  • Rosario Park and all of Stagecoach Road
  • Farren Road and Las Varas Canyon Road

Alerts were sent to hundreds of phones and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's officials went door to door to make sure residents were aware of the orders.

Evacuation orders were already in place for the areas of:

  • Highway I54 from Armour Ranch Road on the west to Paradise Road on the east.
  • West Camino Cielo from the Winchester Gun Club east to Highway 154
  • Kinevan Road

People in these areas are advised to leave immediately.

The following road closures are in effect:

  • Highway 154 from Highway 246 to Foothill Road
  • Calle Real west of the 101 Northbound onramp at the Hollister/Cathedral Oaks onramp
  • At-Grade Crossing at Las Varas Canyon Road
  • Northbound offramp at Dos Pueblos Canyon (Naples)
  • Winchester Canyon to El Capitan
  • Salvar Road at Via Gaitero
  • West Camino Cielo from Refugio Road east to the fire

Fire officials say the Whittier Fire has been slowly backing down the south slope of the Santa Ynez Mountains above the canyons west of Goleta. Sundowner winds are expected again Saturday evening, so fire crews are again in the area to protect it. Additional resources have been called in to assist firefighters already battling the blaze.

The Whittier Fire broke out along Highway 154 on the afternoon of Saturday, July 8. As of Saturday morning, it had burned 17,364 acres and was 35 percent contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
