Cuesta College’s nationally-recognized welding team is setting up shop this week at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles.
Children and adults alike can try out the blow torches at the mobile welding trailer. Instructor Mike Fontes says the trailer is already a hit.
“People want to weld!” he exclaimed. “There’s something about putting metal together and seeing sparks fly that always interests people.”
The idea behind the mobile welding trailer was to reach out to local high schools and the rest of the community to demonstrate that welding is a good career opportunity, Fontes said.
“We’re so short on welders in the nation right now,” he said. “Anybody that can weld and get certified can actually get out and get a job.”
The welding trailer is at the fair from noon to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
