Santa Maria firefighters are back after working on fires burning around California.
The firefighters worked on the Schaeffer Fire, near Kernville, and Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County. They also worked on our local fires, the Alamo Fire and Whittier Fire.
Even though 18 of their firefighters were deployed for up to two weeks, the Santa Maria Fire Department was able to maintain adequate staffing at their station throughout the fires.
Santa Maria Fire Battalion Chief Thomas Crakes said their firefighters learn important skills when they are out fighting fires.
"We do go out and help other people, but we also use it as training to bring back that information and knowledge back here to the city."
The Alamo Fire is now fully contained and the Whittier Fire is expected to be fully contained by the end of the next month.
