On Ashton Engebretson's 8th birthday, the family car was accidentally left unlocked and someone stole all of Ashton's gifts.

Santa Maria police say officers who took the vehicle burglary report decided to put about $300 of their own money together to replace the boy's presents.

"He's a very polite, young, kind kid who seems like he's got a very kind heart," said Officer Mize. "We just do it because it's human kindness. It's what we do the job for, to help people, you know, and no one is gonna let this kid be victimized on his birthday, and I brought it up to my shift and they felt the same way."

Ashton's mom says the officers' act of kindness really brightened the eight-year-old's day and made his birthday one to remember.
