Shops, a restaurant, and new apartments are coming to downtown Paso Robles

The Paso Robles City Council has approved a mixed-use development for a property on Spring Street between 18th and 19th streets.

The downtown lot has been vacant for years.

"I believe it's been empty for almost 10 years and it's just overgrown," said Paso Robles resident Marco Sturken.

But it won't be empty for long, as the Paso Market Place will soon be built, bringing restaurants, rental opportunities, and many small retail shops to the area.

"You know, wine shops, there is a couple restaurants, possibly jewelry. I don't think they have specific tenants online yet but they are looking for what is considered specialty retail," explained City Planner Darren Nash.

The site includes a historic home which used to be a nursery. The building will be turned into a restaurant.

Four new buildings will be built for retail, according to the plan.

Residential units will be on the second floors of two of those buildings.

With this new marketplace, city officials hope to extend the downtown feel and residents agree it will.

"You know, taking something that's kind of run down and you are building it back up and move everything down, you basically, you are bringing downtown this way. I am super excited about it. It's going to be awesome," Sturken added.

Officials said they are glad to be able to redevelop a site that was once used rather than developing new projects outside of town.

Construction should begin this year once the permitting process is complete.
