A fire that broke out Monday evening in Monterey County had the potential to char hundreds of acres of land but was brought under control before that could happen.

Late Monday night, CAL FIRE of Monterey County announced the Country Fire was fully contained at 82 acres.

The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. in the area of Portuguese Canyon Rd. and Cross Country Rd. An hour later, CAL FIRE reported the fire was 30-percent contained at 70 acres and its forward progress was stopped.

David Clark with CAL FIRE of Monterey County said earlier that the fire had the potential to burn 400 acres.

CAL FIRE SLO assisted with an air attack of two tankers and a helitanker out of Paso Robles. The agency also sent three engines and at least one dozer.
