A vegetation fire in a riverbed in Lompoc was quickly contained Monday evening, fire officials said, and now police are looking for two boys seen running from the fire.

The fire was in the riverbed along a bike path less than a quarter-mile from the intersection of North A Street & East Central Ave.

Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said the fire was contained at 2.2 acres and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Witness Nancy Rudd tells KSBY News she was on a walk with her granddaughter when they smelled smoke, then saw two boys starting a fire.

"I went towards the boys and they started running," said Rudd, adding she was going to put out the fire but it spread very rapidly.

Rudd said she and her granddaughter called 911, then gave their account of what happened to the police and the fire department.

"One kid was around 13 or older and one kid was around 7 or 8," she said. "It was no accident. They purposely started the fire."

Sgt. Scott Morgan with the Lompoc Police Department confirmed two juveniles were seen running from the area of the fire.

Police have started an investigation and are hoping the public can help officers positively identify the children who were at the scene.
