Cowboys and cowgirls gather for old-fashioned shooting competition

Posted: Updated:

If you have noticed some cowboys around San Luis Obispo, don't worry you did not go back in time.

The 23rd Annual Chorro Valley Shoot-Out kicked off Thursday and will run until Sunday afternoon.

Over 300 cowboys and cowgirls are participating in the event which is being held by The Chorro Valley Regulators, an organization working to preserve the sport of cowboy action shooting.

According to The Chorro Valley Regulators website, cowboy action shooting is a scenario-based competition in which participants dress up in true old west fashion and shoot with authentic or replica guns of the time.

"This is the only county in California that has a direct historical connection to all of the three most famous outlaw gangs in the old west," said Sam Cotton, a member of The Chorro Valley Regulators.

Visitors from eight states and two foreign countries are participating at the event.
