Santa Barbara police catch suspected armed robbers

A man and a woman suspected of a string of armed robberies dating back to January were arrested Tuesday afternoon in Santa Barbara.

According to Joshua Morton of the Santa Barbara Police Department, 42-year-old Carlos Rio Sosa Jr. and 39-Year-Old Ana Maria Espinosa of Lancaster were taken into custody at 3:35 p.m.

The pair is suspected of carrying out four separate armed robberies involving a total of seven victims. All of the robberies occurred in Santa Barbara, the most recent one taking place August 2.

Police say both suspects were booked on suspicion of multiple crimes. Sosa racked up more than 20 counts:

  • Felony robbery (six counts)
  • Felony assault with a firearm (seven counts)
  • Felony possession of personal information (five counts)
  • Felony dissuading a witness
  • Felony conspiracy

After his arrest, police say Sosa was booked on additional charges:

  • Felony possession of a loaded firearm
  • Felony possession of a firearm
  • Felony prior conviction of a felon in possession of a firearm
  • Felony unlawful possession of ammunition
  • Misdemeanor unlawful possession of a high capacity magazine
  • Misdemeanor possession of cocaine
  • Misdemeanor child endangerment

Espinosa faces the following:

  • Felony robbery
  • Felony conspiracy
  • Misdemeanor child endangerment 

The two are being held at the Santa Barbara County Jail, Sosa on a $1,000,000 bail and a California State Parole hold and Espinosa on $50,000 bail.

The cases remain under investigation.
