Police shared video Friday of a man they say was prowling in a San Luis Obispo neighborhood.

The surveillance video was recorded around 3:45 a.m. on a porch in the San Luis Drive area, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

A man is seen walking up to the front door of a home and using his cell phone light to look around. It appears he spots a Nest Cam Outdoor security camera, then quickly leaves.

SLO PD says the man appears to be in his twenties, wearing a backpack and a t-shirt with what looks to be a panda on it.

In releasing the video, the police department also announced officers took two reports of thefts Friday from unlocked cars in the vicinity of the prowler. Police say a camera was stolen from one car; clothing, sunglasses and two chargers were taken from the other car.

If you recognize the man in the video or see suspicious activity in your San Luis Obispo neighborhood, call police at 805-781-7312 or Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP.

To avoid becoming an easy target for thieves, here's how police suggest you protect yourself:

  • Keep your car locked
  • Take valuables out of your car
  • Park in a secure (garage) or well-lit area
  • Add motion-activated lighting to your driveway
  • Look out for people walking through neighborhoods in the early morning hours
