Former pro basketball player now teaching in Santa Maria
Monday was the first day of the new school year and for nearly 70 teachers at the Santa Maria Bonita School District, it was also the first day on the job.
The district has 69 new teachers for this school year. One of them is Ibrahim Mousaoui. Mousaoui comes from Algeria where he played professional basketball, starting when he was 15 years old. He speaks three languages and went to college in Chicago.
He has been in Santa Maria for less than a week but says he is excited to be teaching at Fairlawn School. Mousaoui says he hopes to learn from the students, especially a new language.
"I want them to understand that I really know their struggle with all the social factors, the language barriers," said Mousaoui. "However, this should never be an excuse to not push through and be successful."
Mousaoui will be teaching P.E. and says he is excited about the sunshine.
