The Santa Ynez High School football program finished the 2016 year going 8-2 overall, ending its season with two tough losses in league play that ultimately halted its chance to the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
The Pirates were on a hot start, winning seven straight wins including two huge shutouts before dropping its first game in week 8 against Lompoc High School.
This year, head coach Josh McClurg said his players are vying for a trip to the postseason. "I think everyone's got the hopes and the goals to make it to CIF," McClurg said. "The last two years have been a disappointment in that way finishing 7-3 two years ago and 8-2 last year and still not making the playoffs. So, I think our kids are hungry they are really focused on trying to make the playoffs."
Santa Ynez will play its season opener at home against San Marcos on August 25.
