A local nonprofit is making progress in buying a new fleet of bikes that it will use to teach children important safety lessons.
Bike SLO County said it has purchased 30 new bikes at a steep discount with help from Foothill Cyclery in San Luis Obispo and Trek Bicycles. The nonprofit has set a $4,650 goal on GoFundMe in order to pay for the fleet. The bikes were unveiled outside Foothill Cyclery on Wednesday.
"Every school we go to, we will take either the entire fleet, or enough of the fleet so that there aren't any kids that are left out that want to participate in the on-bike education," said Executive Director Mike Bennett.
Bike SLO County plans to use the fleet of bikes as part of their educational programs teaching children road safety.
"In the long run, hopefully some of the things they'll learn going through our program are going to turn them into safer drivers as well as safer cyclists," said Bennett.
