Bubblegum Alley is a popular tourist stop for visitors to the Central Coast

Posted: Updated:

Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo is the most famous alleyway on the Central Coast. It's the only one of its kind in California.

Many tourists love to stop by for a quick photoshoot in front of the thousands of pieces of chewed gum stuck to the walls.

"I think it's amazing. I never would have imagined somewhere like this could have existed. It's really quite a sight," said Tom Hammersley, visiting with his wife and children.

"There's a kind of like fruity smell in the air. You can see who's been here before with all the business cards," said Tom's wife, Vicky Hammersley.

You can see years and years worth of chewed pieces of gum.

Visit SLO says the alleyway became popular in the early 1970s and has only been cleaned twice.

It is tucked away off Higuera between Broad and Garden Streets.

The City of San Luis Obispo suggests visitors leave their mark when they stop by. It's free and open at all times of the day. Gum is not provided.
