Pres. Trump surveys Harvey's devastation

Posted: Updated:

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Texas Tuesday for a first-hand look at the devastation from the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Trump called it a storm of "epic proportion."

He was joined at a suburban fire station in the Corpus Christi area by first lady Melania Trump. The first lady sat beside the president as various officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott, briefed the president on efforts before and after Harvey made landfall on Friday.

The storms brought five straight days of rain and floodwaters that have forced tens of thousands from their homes.

Ric Saldivar's brother survived, but as he was trying to evacuate with his parents and four children, great-nieces and nephews, the water swept their van away.

"He could hear the kids screaming and trying to get out of the van," Saldivar said. "And then the van just sank underneath."

A Houston police officer also drowned when his car was overcome by flood water.

Rescue teams continue pouring into the area from across the country, joined by a volunteer navy using whatever they can to carry survivors to higher ground.

"Everyone in the state of Texas is focused first on saving every life that we can," said Gov. Greg Abbott.

President Trump is promising federal help through the long and difficult recovery.

"It is epic, what happened, but you know what, it happened in Texas and Texas can handle anything," he said.

There are more than 17,000 people in area shelters and today the mayor warned, before it's over, he expects at least 10,000 more will need a place to stay.
