Righetti looks to snap 'Battle for the Shield' losing streak

Posted: Updated:

This Friday night, the Central Coast high school football enters Week 1 and a very exciting match up awaits; the 'Battle for the Shield' between cross-street rivals, Righetti and St. Joseph.

Although it's a non-league game, this contest features one of the Central Coast's biggest rivalries. St. Joseph has won the past two years and holds a 4-3 record since the trophy came into existence in 2010.

After a win over Morro Bay in Week 0, Righetti comes into the battle with some momentum and hopes of snapping their losing streak to St. Joseph.

"I think it will be a dream come true because we haven't had the shield up on varsity since junior year when we lost it," Righetti senior safety Austin Dasis said. "Just having it back home and celebrating with it at night if we win, it will be great."

"They know each other very well. They're still really good friends except for Friday nights because they're going to get it on against one other," Righetti head coach Ed Herrmann added. "All do respect for St. Joseph, they're a great team that has some great skill players, but we hope we can go over there and give them a good game."

Righetti travels to St. Joseph on Friday night with kick off at 7:00pm.
