Local businesses collecting donations for Hurricane Harvey victims

Posted: Updated:

While emergency crews are saving residents of Texas from catastrophic flooding, there is a way you can help.

Several local organizations and businesses are stepping up to send relief to damaged cities but many of them need your assistance.

Meathead Movers is among those businesses asking residents to donate goods.

Staff members plan to fill up their moving trucks with 20,000 lbs worth of goods and drive to the Dallas Convention Center, where most evacuees are being housed.

Organizers ask that you donate unused items.

"Socks, underwear, toiletries, hygiene items, sweats and baby items like formulas, diapers, bottles, pack and plays - anything like that will help," said Frances Herevia, Meathead Movers' call center manager.

You can drop off supplies at their office on 3600 S. Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo until Sunday at 6 p.m.

If you can't afford to donate, the moving company will also transport cards and notes of well-wishes to victims.

A woman who just moved from Texas to Lompoc is organizing donations to help horses affected by flooding. Jenna Harrison will drop off donations with a group called 'Forgotten Horse Rescues,' which will head to Texas with supplies.

"They don't know what to do. They're at a loss. It's devastating. It hurts to be here and not be able to help," Harrison said.

They are looking for any donations, but especially ropes, halters and feed for any animals. If you'd like to help, bring donations to Lemos Feed and Supply on 1620 N St. F in Lompoc.

The Spa Central Coast in Paso Robles has a sign out front reading "Help Texas. Bring Items. We will ship out."  They're collecting toiletries, blankets, baby food, diapers and pet items for Austin Disaster Relief Network, the Texas Diaper Bank and the Animal Defense League of Texas, among others.

Pizza Garden in Lompoc plans to donate $10 for every large pizza purchased. The fundraiser will start on Monday, September 4 and conclude on Sunday, September 10 from open to close.

The Central Coast American Red Cross asks that residents donate online rather than donating goods. They do not have the proper storage or transportation for donated items.

Charity Navigator also lists many national organizations that will be donating to Texas as well.
