St. Joseph goes for third straight shield victory

Posted: Updated:

The St. Joseph and Righetti football programs share one of the Central Coast's biggest rivalries, and on Friday night, they'll meet for the eight edition of the 'Battle for the Shield'. It's a trophy game created in 2010 when the two school started to schedule each other again.

The Knights hold the upper hand over the their cross-street counterparts with a 4-3 shield record, including back-to-back victories in 2015 and 2016.

St. Joseph will look to make it three straight wins on Friday night.

"It's amazing really. It's memories that will last a lifetime," Knights senior Mason Biely said. "I talk to alumni and they share with me that this is all they talk about, 'Hey, remember that one time we went across the street to play Righetti?' It's all they talk about. This year would dignify that, while I was here, St. Joseph was the best."

"It's huge. These kids look a the shield and it's exciting to have it," Knights head coach Jim Chvala added. "Emotions are high, heartbeats are running, blood is up, everyone is excited. You're just hoping you can take the first deep breath, regroup, and make the plays count."

St. Joseph will host Righetti tomorrow night. Kickoff is 7:00pm.
