New indoor trampoline park opens in Santa Maria

Posted: Updated:

An indoor trampoline park opened Friday afternoon in Santa Maria, the first such facility in the growing city.

"It's exciting, like, Santa Maria is growing as a city and for them to have this is pretty cool," said Roberto Robles, Los Alamos resident.

"I feel like this is going to be a boost for kids to get out more and be active, especially here like jumping around," said Victor Castillo, Nipomo resident.

The Rockin' Jump trampoline park has open jump arenas, dodgeball, and a rock climbing wall.

Co-owner of Rockin' Jump, Craig Smith, says there are all sorts of ways to exercise while having fun.

"This is our junior jump zone, 6 and under children, they have access to the whole park but if they want to get away from the big kids, if it's a little crazy, they have their own mini little trampoline park inside the big trampoline park," he explained.

For sanitary and safety reasons, all jumpers must wear special socks and abide by all safety rules to prevent injuries.

Dr. Robert Okerblom says constant adult supervision is crucial.

"If you have a couple kids on a trampoline, sometimes you get a super launch and kids will come down and break their leg even on the trampoline, and then if you start doing flips and fancy stuff without supervision, there is a whole spinal injury, head injuries," he said.

According to BrainandSpinalCord.org, around 20 percent of injuries to the spinal cord are caused by the use of trampolines.

To ensure that safety procedures are being followed, Smith says each station will be supervised at all times and protective padding surrounds all trampolines.

"We don't want people double bouncing. That's when people will get hurt, so we just make sure that everybody is at a safe distance away from each other that are bouncing and having a great time but not doing anything dangerous that will cause injuries," Smith added.

The Rockin' Jump trampoline park opened its doors Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Santa Maria Town Center Mall.
