Oregon soccer edges Cal Poly 2-1 at Boise State Bronco Tournament

Posted: Updated:

Cal Poly scored late in the first half to pull within a goal of Oregon on Sunday at Boise State, but the Ducks women's soccer team held on to edge the Mustangs on a hot final day of the Bronco Tournament at Boas Soccer Complex, 2-1.

Four minutes into the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Cal Poly senior Megan Abutin had the match's first shot on goal, but Halla Hinriksdottir, an Iceland Youth National Team member, was in position to secure the save.

Oregon (3-1-0), coming off a 1-0 win over Oklahoma, took the lead in the ninth minute when Marissa Everett assisted Jayne Lydiatt on a set piece from atop the penalty area.

Mustang junior Chelsea Barry also shot on frame in the 17th minute, and Abutin forced another save in the 25th.

Lydiatt also played a role in the Ducks' other goal, finding Kyra Fawcett with a through ball to set up an opportunity deep inside the box.

The Mustangs got on the board with a minute-and-a-half left before the break, as sophomore Jessica Johnson put away a rebound of a Lexi Marietti shot that came off a corner kick by Senna Brennan.

It was the second goal in three days for Johnson, a 2016 All-Big West Freshman Team selection who tallied the game-winner in Cal Poly's 1-0 victory over Boise State on Friday night.

Ashley Kirchick also tested the keeper with a 47th-minute shot, and fellow junior Stephanie Magellan also shot on target in the 71st — but Hinriksdottir came up with the stops to help Oregon hang on.

Cal Poly sophomore Sophia Brown made 10 saves, one off her career high.

The Mustangs (2-3-1) will next visit San Jose State for a 2 p.m. kickoff Friday, before hosting their home opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium vs. Sacramento State at 7 p.m. Sept. 15.
