Some Santa Maria vineyards ready for harvest

Posted: Updated:

The Allan Hancock College Vineyards in Santa Maria are ready for harvest.

Faculty, students and local high school students harvest the grapes from the beginning of August to the end of September.

From there, they are pressed and bottled right on campus.

Pinot noir grapes are being plucked right now as recent heat caused them to ripen quicker than usual.

"Most of the aromas are in the skins and the color. We look at the skin we look at the seeds (to see) if they are ripe. They're more ripe if we harvest with clusters together or we just extend them," said Alfredo Koch, an Allan Hancock College Agriculture professor.

Faculty says every harvest is different, and that's why these details are important.
