Carroll's goal hands Cal Poly men’s soccer 1-0 win in home opener

Posted: Updated:

Junior defender Nick Carroll's first career goal in his 34th collegiate match was the difference Sunday afternoon for the Cal Poly men's soccer program as the Mustangs produced a 1-0, home-opening victory versus Saint Mary's inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme produced four saves to earn his first collegiate shutout for Cal Poly (1-4-0), which was kept to just one shot on target for the opening 81 minutes until freshman midfielder Jose Rivera dribbled through into the Saint Mary's penalty area. Rivera laid a pass off for Carroll (above), who fired the game winner into the top right of the Saint Mary's net.

Outshot 7-3 during the opening period, Cal Poly compiled the first scoring chance of the second half as sophomore midfielder Christian Enriquez was turned away by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Remi Prieur in the 53rd minute.

Boehme, the Big West Conference leader at 7.0 saves per match, then produced saves in the 60th and 70th minutes to keep Sunday's match scoreless.

Cal Poly freshman defender Andrew Forth nearly found the opening goal in the 75th minute, but lashed his only attempt of the game wide of the right post.

Mustang forwards Sean Goode and Angel De Leon each finished with a match leading three shot attempts.

Cal Poly resumes action on Saturday, Sept. 16 at San Diego State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
