A 12-year-old girl who authorities say was not wearing a seatbelt was killed when she was thrown from an SUV that crashed off Highway 101 outside of Buellton Sunday night.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the 35-year-old driver of the 2003 Lincoln Navigator was driving approximately 75 mph in the southbound lanes, south of Highway 154, in heavy rain when he lost control of the SUV shortly before 11:00 p.m.

The vehicle went off the road and overturned in the median.

The 12-year-old was ejected onto the northbound lanes and died at the scene, according to officers. The fast lane was closed for approximately one hour.

Three other children, ages 4 and 7, in the vehicle who were wearing seatbelts, according to CHP, were not injured.

A 37-year-old passenger reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The driver, identified as Erasmo Vargas, was not arrested or injured. Authorities say drugs and alcohol were ruled out as contributing factors in the crash.

All involved were from Encino.
