Santa Maria Fire Dept. hosts 9/11 memorial service

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Maria Fire Department hosted several ceremonies commemorating those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, along with their friends, family members, and first responders who continue to risk their lives every day.

It started with a traditional series of horn blasts. Fire crews went to each fire station in the city with a message of remembrance.

"Each year that we've done this, it helps us focus, it helps us remember and reflect, and so it just helps us to remember those sacrifices," said Fire Chief Leonard Champion.

Station flags were lowered to half-staff and will return to full-staff later tonight.
