Police in Atascadero are looking for a burglar they say broke into a restaurant Monday morning and left seconds later with the cash register.

It happened at 5:20 a.m., according to police and surveillance video of the break-in at Garcia's Mexican Restaurant.

In the video, a burglar rushes toward the counter and rips away the register. The suspect's face was obscured by a hat and what looks to be a bandanna.

Police say the burglar broke in through the front door of the restaurant located on El Camino Real near Santa Rosa Road.

KSBY News spoke with Garcia's owner Carlos Ramirez. He said restaurant employees posted the video to Facebook and someone who saw the video later saw the register dumped along Highway 101 near The Home Depot and reported the sighting to police.

Officers recovered the broken register but found no money in it. Ramirez says there was probably only around $30 inside. The register, however, was worth $1,500 and the broken glass in the front of the restaurant cost $500 to fix.

The family that runs the restaurant plans to talk things over with their insurance company and work with a security company to better secure the restaurant.

If you know who may have broken into the restaurant, call the Atascadero Police Department.
