Santa Maria police officers will be on the lookout for people in violation of pedestrian and bike safety laws.

Tuesday, extra officers will patrol areas where pedestrian and bicycle collisions often occur.

The police department say officers will be looking for drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians and any other dangerous violation.

Officers will also stop pedestrians who cross the street illegally or who don't yield to drivers with the right away.

Cyclists will be stopped and cited for violating basic traffic laws and for not wearing a helmet.

Tuesday's special enforcement operation is a response to ten fatal bike and pedestrian crashes in Santa Maria in the last three years.
