Driver in deadly 2014 Cayucos crash sentenced

Posted: Updated:

The driver in a crash that killed a Los Osos teen and toddler back in 2014 was sentenced on Tuesday.

Tanner Mengore was placed on three years of formal probation and ordered to serve 180 days in jail, according to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors claimed Mengore was under the influence of marijuana and spice when he veered out of control on Highway 1 near Cayucos, killing Simon Brito, 17, and 22-month-old Mason Simmonds-Gibson.

In March, a jury found Mengore guilty of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in connection with the death of the toddler. The jury was hung on a second vehicular manslaughter charge. Mengore was acquitted of child endangerment and driving under the influence of drugs.
