Driver arrested after pursuit from Nipomo to Templeton

Posted: Updated:

A man is behind bars after he led officials on a chase late Tuesday night from Nipomo to Templeton.

The CHP tells KSBY they got a tip from San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Deputies about a speeding pick-up truck in Nipomo. Deputies called off the chase shortly before 11:00 p.m. CHP then picked up the pursuit of the driver's Toyota Tacoma on northbound Highway 101 at S. Higuera St. at 11:01 p.m.

Officers tailed the Tacoma through San Luis Obispo, up the Cuesta Grade and past Santa Margarita.

At 11:14 p.m., CHP deployed a spike strip at Santa Barbara Road in Atascadero that took out most of the Tacoma's tires, but that did not immediately stop the driver.

The pursuit continued through Atascadero into Templeton, where the fleeing driver exited at Las Tablas Road and was taken into custody at 11:32 p.m., CHP reported.

The driver was identified as 25-year-old Brandon Malterer of Apple Valley. He was the only person in the pickup. No one was reported injured.

Malterer is charged with felony evading, and being in possession of a loaded short-barreled rifle and meth, which are both felonies.
