Physical education equipment was stolen from a Santa Maria elementary school after thieves broke into a storage shed over the weekend, according to school officials.

The P.E. storage shed at Taylor Elementary School is right next to the playground. Police say someone cut a lock to gain access to the school grounds.

The principal says the school is still checking inventory to see what exactly was stolen.

"It was disappointing that somebody would enter our school grounds and take equipment that our students utilize as part of their P.E. program," said Jennifer Loftus, the principal. "However, we have taken the measures to get a list of items that were taken and will be obtaining those items for our students so that they don't miss out on the important P.E. time."

It is unknown if a police investigation is underway.
