Crash in Santa Maria leaves motorcyclist in critical condition

Posted: Updated:

A motorcyclist is in critical condition after crashing into an SUV Wednesday morning in Santa Maria.

It happened shortly after 9 a.m. on Stowell Road near Broadway, next to the JCPenney shopping center.

Santa Maria police closed off Stowell Road and diverted traffic after the motorcycle crashed into a silver Toyota 4-Runner.

Officers say the motorcyclist was going eastbound on Stowell, while the SUV was making a left turn into the shopping center. They say the motorcycle crashed into the turning vehicle, hitting the rear passenger side, then slid 50 yards across the street.

“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen. There is plastic all over the place,” said Richard Freitas, Santa Maria resident.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV was treated on scene but not hospitalized.

Santa Maria police crime scene technicians remained on scene for hours, collecting evidence and taking photos of the roadway.

“The traffic bureau is going to look into all that aspects of this collision to determine fault,” said Sergeant Jesus Valle, Santa Maria Police Department.

Sergeant Duane Schneider says speed and right of way are the main reasons for accidents, especially in this high traffic area.

“Speed definitely had an involvement in this collision, so I would tell everybody to be careful and watch for motorcycles and also watch your speed and pay attention to bicyclists and motorcyclists on the roadway,” Schneider said.

The area in which the collision occurred is under surveillance. Officers say they will look at the surveillance video as part of the investigation.

Santa Maria police will be conducting an enforcement operation in the area on Thursday, focusing on bicyclist and pedestrian safety.
