The Paso Robles City Council unanimously approved a land swap deal on Tuesday involving the River Lodge Motel.

According to Mayor Steve Martin, the city will swap a piece of land at the southeast corner of Highway 46 and Theatre Drive with the River Lodge Motel property at Theatre Drive and Alexa Court. Zinque Hotels, the current owners of the River Lodge Motel, want to build a 116-room Hyatt Place Hotel there. Under the land swap, the city will take ownership of the River Lodge Motel while it finds a way to preserve the historic motel.

Zinque Hotels originally planned to demolish the River Lodge Motel until concerned residents called for the city to save the motel's historic post-war architecture.
