Santa Ynez football looks to stay unbeaten in Week 5

Posted: Updated:

Week 5 marks the halfway point of the prep football season and our 'FNH Game of the Week' features undefeated Santa Ynez hosting Santa Maria.

Santa Ynez is 4-0 this season, led by their offense which is averaging a whopping 51 points per game. Senior quarterback Dustin Gregg tallied six touchdowns and 341 yards passing in last week's 41-7 victory at Templeton.

While the Pirates are excited to be undefeated to start the year, they know it has put a target on their back going forward.

"It just fuels us more knowing that people want to beat us," Gregg said. "That gives us extra pressure, but it's more motivation to go out and beat these really good teams we're playing."

"Of course our intentions are to make it to the CIF playoffs, but right now we're focusing on each game," Pirates senior receiver Gabe Prendergast added. "Our moral is really high, and we're just looking really good."

"It's our job as coaches to keep the kids focused on every game is championship week, we're 0-0, things of that nature," Pirates head coach Josh McClurg said. "I think that helps you not look forward or look back and dwell on mistakes or trying to look at the next game. We're just focused, right now, on Santa Maria."

Pirates' team manager, Alec Watson has been assigned to pad up for the first play. Watson has a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot preventing him from playing sports. He's had two open-heart surgeries before reaching age one. He's also received more than 70 blood transfusions. Both Santa Ynez and Santa Maria have partnered up to make this special moment possible for Watson.
