The Rucker Fire gave firefighters and homeowners a big reminder that fire season is still in full swing.

Santa Barbara County Fire officials say the flames made a pretty good run at homes along Rucker Road.

Homeowners were even seen trying to help put out the flames alongside firefighters with their garden hoses.

After evacuations were lifted Friday evening, one man came back to find his home and property covered in fire retardant.

"I had tears in my eyes 'cause I didn't think I had anything left," said Steve Kennon, a Mission Hills resident. "It's just like a nightmare, a bad dream."

Kennon came home to see his property covered in red, and he immediately started washing off the Phos-Chek.

"I've seen a lot of things, but never anything like this," Kennon said. "Every top up here is red, every street is red, every tree red."
"This is an area where there were homes on one side and across the street was open land; and that fire made a big run towards these houses which was a concern at one point," said Mike Eliason, Santa Barbara County Public Information Officer.
Eliason says air tankers made a big concentration stop with fire retardant.

"We had engine companies here, because some embers were carrying over, to the houses and starting some spot fires in the back yard of some of these houses," Eliason told KSBY News.

Many homes near Rucker Road were completely covered in fire retardant.

"It helped save the houses, 'cause we still here," Kennon said. "But is is really bad. I ain't got much in life but this little I got I don't want to lose it."

Kennon says this will take him days to clean up, but he's glad he has his dog Roscoe by his side.

"We love each other," he said. "I guess things be okay when you love one another. I wish I could get through. if I will, I don't even stop praying. God make a way for us."
