Construction has begun on an 18.5-acre solar farm on the Cal Poly campus.

The solar farm is being built on grazing land next to Highway 1 on the western edge of the campus, between the California Men's Colony and the San Luis Obispo Water Treatment Plant.

Cal Poly officials expect the solar farm to provide up to 25 percent of the university's electrical needs, leading to the savings of millions of dollars. It is expected to generate more than 11 million kWh per year.

The project is being financed through a power purchase agreement with REC Solar, which reportedly allows the university to buy energy at a lower rate without paying upfront costs for the system's construction and maintenance.

Construction is expected to be complete in late December. Once it's finished, the Animal Science department will use the site for research into vegetation management and to graze its sheep herd.
