With local ties to the crisis in Puerto Rico, the Ranch Church in Santa Ynez started a fundraiser for relief efforts Sunday.

The pastor, Rick Soto, is from Puerto Rico and still has friends and family in the area.

Soto says the farming community he's from has been completely destroyed because of the two hurricanes. The supplies they need most are chainsaws and satellite phones, so the church has offered to start a fund to help.

Their goal is to reach $100,000. In 24 hours, they've raised $10,000, with up to $40,000 pledged by members.

"The situation (is) so serious," Soto said. "We've got a lot of shut-ins, a lot of ederly, and a lot of old folks' homes and convalescence homes where people sit in the dark all day and they hope that somebody will come by with a meal for them."

The funds will go directly to the Calvary Chapel Puerto Rico, as designated by FEMA, and will be distributed to locals for tools.
